005. peperomia fam

peperomia plants look super interesting and are easy going – a great combo 🙂 there are 1500-1700 species of peperomia as of 2005 making this one of the largest groups of basal angiosperms aka flowering plants (wanke et al., 2005). ‘peperomia’ is derived from the greek words ‘peperi’ (pepper) & ‘homoios’ (resembling), as they are…

004. marantacaea fam

i love the diverse foliage of marantaceae plants, which originated in africa. they include the following plants: calathea, ctenanthe, maranta, and stromanthe. these guys are sometimes called prayer plants in reference to the movement of their leaves. this is due to nyctinasty, a process which is a type of circadian rhythm. movement is facilitated by a…

sansevieria plants are the most chill. they’re easy to care for and super sturdy. commonly known as snake plants, these guys are native to africa. snake plants hold a special place in my heart. the trifasciata to the left in the photo below is a pup from a mother plant at my grandparents’ place. it was…

002. dischidia fam

dischidia plants are one of the coolest plants out there. they are epiphytes native to tropical areas of southeast asia and closely related to hoyas. they are ant gardens, which are ant/plant mutualisms whereby ants farm epiphytes and in return the plants provide shelter and food. ants gather seeds to feed on and then abandon…

001. hoya fam

hoyas are some of my fave plants. these tropical plants are native to areas in between south east asia and australia. these plants are often to referred to as wax plants for their appearance and texture. hoyas are a vining plant, that can climb or trail, and most are epiphytic. the flowers of hoyas are waxy…

true story: i sat on euphorbia trigona [🔖#jmeuphorbiatrigona] when i was checking in on another plant & broke half a stem 🪴🙊😅 it’s all g though, they’ve put roots down in their new home. the other member of this trio is the red trigona cutting my friend mj gave me to the left. these guys are easy going & they love being thoroughly watered when they’ve dried out. this keeps the leaves growing + prevents them from falling out.
this month’s #📚lostinplantopia book feature is red skin, white masks by glen coulthard, a yellowknives dene professor. i read this book during my thesis & it transformed my thinking about colonialism + ways of supporting indigenous sovereignty by embracing anti-colonial resistance & liberation through decolonization + reconnecting with my ancestors & cultural knowledge.
these guys [🔖#jmsansevieria] are some of my faves. they’re super chill & haven’t had any pests or other plant issues. this summer i’m finally going to repot all of them 🐍 🐍
do you know vincent chin? he was a chinese-american man who was murdered by two white men in a racist & xenophobic attack right in detroit in 1982. last night i watched a documentary by renee tajima-peña & christine choy, which pieces together what happened to vincent chin, the injustices committed by the policing + legal systems + the media, & the effect this case had on the asian american community using news clips, interviews with people involved, including mrs. chin, vincent’s mom who fought for justice for her son, & the murderers themselves.
💭 day dreaming.
